What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?

  • Everyone worries from time to time, but people with generalized anxiety disorder experience chronic and excessive worry that feels impossible to "shut off". People with GAD also tend to anticipate the worst, and often worry about situations that are unlikely to occur. Worries can focus on a variety of everyday issues, including health, family, money, and work. Physical symptoms often accompany the worries and include restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance. Together, these symptoms cause significant distress and/ or interfere with the individual’s everyday functioning. Sometimes GAD symptoms lead to serious depression.

  • Treatments that have been shown to be effective for GAD include several medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
